I went to Eric and Anne’s house. I had a great time!
First, we filled up the blue jay feeder with peanut’s. It was strange because they did not come. They usually do. Next we set up a frog habitat, and caught 15 or 16 frogs. One was very BIG and we named him Daddy. They were on top of each other.
When we were thirsty, we had orange juice. I helped with the fishing, I caught 2 bass and a lot of catfish. I held the bass. I could not hold the cat fish because they had little spikes on their fins. Eric got spiked, just a small spike on his thumb.
After that I swam in the river. It was cold and Eric wore my pink hat! HA! Then we played croquet. Eric won first, and I won second. Then I went in the hammock. Then I swam some more.
After we went back in the hammock. At the end of our day I roasted and ate three marshmallows. I said goodbye and thank you, went in the hammock and drove home, then I did not go to bed until 10:30!
I can’t wait to go back for a sleepover!
I had an action-packed day! All the activities I did were about Canada 150. I made a friendship bracelet. I learned the legend of John the Baptist and the flying canoe, then we had a flying canoe race. It was fun, but my team lost. After that we played charades. Then I had a S’MORE! Then we went to a campfire and sang songs. I can’t wait until I go to camp again!
We went downtown for a BIG run. Dad ran 10 kilometres and I ran 2 kilometres (Mike, my brother, ran with me). I had so much fun!
I was smushed in all the people at the start and all through the race. Michael went ahead, sprinting through cracks between the people. I kept losing Michael. We ran with no parents and Mommy and Daddy met us at the end.
We had been training for the run for two months. We ran to raise money for Ronald McDonald House, a charity that lets families who live in other cities be close to their kids while they are in the hospital. You can still sponsor us by clicking here.
Afterwards, I had: 2 granola bars and water and lemonade! I LOVE lemonade!! We had lunch at Subway and I went to the bathroom three times.
I can’t wait ’til next year’s run, but I have to. My Grama and Aunt Rachel came along with my family to cheer. I got a medal (so did Michael and Dad)!
I can’t wait ’til the next run!
I went for a hike near my Grama’s house with Dad while Michael was at a birthday party. We had A LOT of FUN!!
We saw garter snakes—a teeny one, a snake ball and lots on their own. There were so many everywhere you looked.
We hiked two hills and saved a baby turtle from the path. I got some bark and lifted the baby turtle; I named it Persephone. She was so cute! It almost got run over by a bike, but I moved it to the side of the path near some water!
Petrie island is flooded! We saw many interesting plants: flowers, trees and bushes.
I can’t wait until our next hike!
The last day of the trip we drove home from Pennsylvania.
Here is an interview with Ava about her road trip adventures:
What was your favourite part of the trip?
Hiking on the Appalachian Trail, because we got to see nature and meet other hikers.
What was the coolest thing you saw on the trail?
A tree with its roots growing around a big rock. I also liked seeing the overnight shelter.
How was it travelling with two younger brothers?
Annoying. But it was good to have playmates and it was funny when Luke chewed Michael’s head.
What did you learn on your trip?
I learned about people fighting in the Civil War to end slavery.
Did you eat anything new or interesting? What was your favourite thing to eat?
Carrot chips and nut, cheese and cranberry snack packs. Daddy made us peanut butter and jam sandwiches for lunches while we were hiking. At some of the hotels they had a buffet for breakfast.
Where would you like to go for your next trip? Why?
Florida, because it has Disney World and I want to go to the beaches.
I can’t wait for our next trip!
I did another Junior Ranger program today. It was FUN! It was at Monocacy battlefield: the battle that saved Washington. It was another Civil War battlefield in Maryland. It was flatter than Antietam.
They gave me a patch and a badge because I finished 10 activities in the Junior Ranger booklet. To get just the badge, you needed five. And all 15 gets a pin, too.
There were a lot of trails at the battlefield, but we couldn’t hike on them because my brothers were asleep. In the museum, we saw the real uniforms soldiers wore in the battle. There was one to try on. Dad suggested to try it on, but I hesitated.
I noticed yesterday when I bit into an apple that my tooth was starting to wiggle. It hurt whenever I ate something and I have been wiggling it all day. It is my front left tooth on the top.
In the morning, we went to Waffle House, a restaurant. Mom gave me a new joke book. I ate one-and-a-half big waffles because Mike didn’t finish his.
We started driving home and are staying in Pennsylvania near where we stayed on our first night. We swam at the hotel. It was great! Mom was brave, she came in.
I can’t wait for the last day of our trip!
We went hiking on the Appalachian Trail again. We hiked a long time. We saw a real shelter that long distance hikers can stay in. I swept it out so that people could sleep in it. Luke helped. I wrote in the hikers log, using my trail name, Flowers.
We saw a stray dog and I named it Caramel. I wanted to adopt it. Mom and dad said no.
We became Junior Rangers on the AT at the Appalachian Trail headquarters in Harpers Ferry. I did a Junior Ranger book and then I finished it and then I got my badge.
We drove to Washington D.C. and we saw lots of monuments: Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, the Capitol building, and the White House.
We went to a baseball game at the end of the day. There was a big play place and I played in it lots with Mike. After that I watched the baseball game. The Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals. I was cheering for the Washington Nationals.
There was also a presidents race. They had ENORMOUS heads. They were Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. And the Geico gecko…my favourite.
We went to a hotel after 11 o’clock. The game ended very late.
I can’t wait for day five!
